Ila Driver was a Fallbrook original! Just out of high school, she worked at a cafe south of town where preparing chicken meant starting from live birds! For that, she earned $.25 per hour, and that was when Ila decided she needed more education to get a better job.
Born and raised here, she attended Reche School, got all of her schooling in Fallbrook. When she was 16, she spent a summer working in Fallbrook’s lemon packing house. Left destitute after her father’s death, she and her brothers went to work to support their mother.
As a child, they never had money, so when they went to a carnival, her oldest brother got a quarter to spend, the next brother got $.15 and Ila got a dime which she knotted in the corner of her handkerchief so she wouldn’t lose it! You’ll have to watch the video to find out how she spent that dime.
