Jack Story
Jack Story was a lifetime resident of Fallbrook. He was born in Fallbrook July 5th, 1934 into a ranching family. Jack attended local elementary and high schools and competed in rodeos.
Jack Story’s grandparents William Clifford Story (b.1884-d.1959) and Lena Roupp Story (b.1887-d.1981) were originally from Nebraska. They arrived in Fallbrook in 1921. Their first home was in the area of Old Stage Road and Clemmens Lane. William Clifford & Lena are buried in the historic Fallbrook Oddfellows Cemetery.
Jack was the eldest son of Clarence Clifford Story (b.1909-d.2005) and Myrtis Martin Story (b.1914-d.1959). About 1940 they started the Story Dairy south of town. In 1947 they sold the dairy, but the new owners kept the name Story Dairy. In 1968, the Story Dairy was still located at 2760 S. Mission Rd, Fallbrook.
Jack spent two years playing in an army band in South Carolina during 1956-57. While there, he met and married his sweetheart, Shirley Seyfer. Upon completion of his military service, Jack returned to his hometown and entered into an agriculture career growing and managing avocado and citrus trees with Bartlett Farm Management.
Music was Jack’s hobby from an early age. Jack was a founding member of the Fallbrook Barbershop Quartet in 1954, known then as the Avocado Empire chapter of the International Barbershop Harmony Society as well as director and member of the Fallbrook United Methodist church choir. He played reed instruments in dance bands, community concert bands, and musical theater venues such as Fallbrook’s Mission Theater Playhouse. His main instrument was the tenor saxophone.
Jack was an entrepreneur. He was a co-founder of The Fallbrook Tennis Club and of The Grand Tradition Estate and Gardens.
Interested in preserving Fallbrook history, Jack was President of the Fallbrook Historical Society for 7 years from 2006 thru 2013. He wrote and contributed “A glimpse into the past” articles to the Village News.
